The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has issued a fresh mandate for virtual reality and immersive learning tools to become central to construction training delivery. NBS, operator of the National BIM Library, is disseminating the report's findings—signalling that digital training methods and BIM competency will increasingly overlap in professional development pathways.
The shift reflects mounting pressure on training providers to move beyond classroom-based delivery. VR-enabled modules allow apprentices to practise hazard recognition, equipment operation and site-specific workflows without on-site risk exposure. For contractors and training centres, this creates immediate operational questions: which platforms integrate with existing BIM workflows, what upfront investment is required, and how do VR credentials translate into recognised qualifications?
Industry decision-makers now face a credibility challenge. Early adopters of immersive training gain competitive advantage in apprentice retention and safety performance.
