The Hamburg architecture firm gmp von Gerkan, Marg und Partner has completed the new Elbbrücken U-Bahn station. The station is part of the transportation infrastructure development for urban development in HafenCity and connects the U4 U-Bahn line with the S-Bahn lines in the eastern part of the district. The architects' solution responds to the complex traffic situation at the location.
The station was built at a critical point in Hamburg's infrastructure. Here, the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus and bicycle traffic intersect, as does the heavily trafficked Amsinckstraße. gmp developed a multi-story structure that organizes the different traffic levels vertically. The platforms are located underground, while the entrance areas above ground are designed with generous glass surfaces.
Architecturally, gmp relies on a transparent façade of glass and steel. The construction avoids heavy solid construction and instead uses delicate steel columns. The supporting structure remains visible and emphasizes the technical function of the building. Through a generous atrium, daylight reaches the platform level. This design decision improves orientation for passengers and reduces the energy requirement for artificial lighting.
According to experts, the Elbbrücken U-Bahn station could become a landmark of the district. The architectural quality stands out clearly from standardized public transportation buildings. gmp has previously realized several transportation structures in Hamburg and has experience with the requirements of Hamburg's elevated railway.
HafenCity has been developing since 2001 on former port and industrial land. With approximately 157 hectares of land, it is one of Europe's largest inner-city urban development projects. The new station opens up the eastern part of the district and improves connections to the city center. Travel time to Hamburg Central Station is reduced to just a few minutes thanks to the U4 connection.
gmp von Gerkan, Marg und Partner is counted among the established architecture firms in Germany. The firm employs over 400 employees worldwide and has realized projects in more than 50 countries. In addition to transportation structures, the portfolio includes sports and cultural buildings as well as administrative and commercial buildings. The Elbbrücken U-Bahn station is part of a series of infrastructure projects, including Berlin Central Station and the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv.
