In a technical sense, scale indicates the reduction ratio of a plan: a floor plan at 1:100 means one centimeter in the drawing equals one meter in reality. Common plan scales range from 1:1 for detail drawings to 1:10,000 for urban planning overviews. In an aesthetic sense, scale describes the relationship of a building to human body size and surrounding development. A human scale creates a sense of shelter, while oversized buildings can be intimidating. The term scalability describes the coherence of these proportions. Le Corbusier's Modulor attempted to develop a universal proportional system based on the human body.
